    College of Charleston Wins Nail-Biter Over LSU, Claims USTA Tennis On Campus Southern Championship

    52 Teams started play in Auburn, Ala. at the 2013 USTA Tennis on Campus Southern, and eight have earned their bids for the 2013 Tennis on Campus National Championships!
     
    In the Championship match College of Charleston won a nail-biting match over LSU, clinching victory in the final mixed doubles match with an overall score of 24-23.
     
    In the non-BCS division, Emory claimed victory over North Carolina (B) 22-19.
     
    The following teams earned national bids based on their finish in the competition this weekend in the BCS division.
     
    Champion: College of Charleston Captain: Kyle Christian
     
    Finalist: LSU, Captain: Dillon Braud (LSU also was the recipient of the Wildcard bid to Nationals as USTA Southern’s Club Team of the Year.)
     
    Third Place: Kentucky, Captain: Grace Ramsdell
     
    Fourth Place: UNC-Greensboro, Captain: Mark Piro & Choong Hong
     
    Fifth Place: Georgia, Captain: Scott Slezak
     
    Sixth Place: UNC, Captain: Philip Mayer
     
    In the non-BCS division,
     
    Champion: Emory, Captain: Michael Fiedler
     
     Additionally, Duke (Captain Stephanie Dudzinski) received a bid to nationals due to winning the Southern Tennis on Campus Fall Invitational. 
     
    Southern tournament hosted 52 club teams and about 415 players from throughout the nine USTA Southern states: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. One team – Texas A & M Texarkana – competed because it is located in a small portion of Texas that in the Southern Section.
     
    The championship was played at Yarbrough Tennis Center and Auburn’s Intermural Courts from Feb. 24-25, with the Yarbrough acting as the main site.
     
    A minimum of two male and two female players play on club teams. Some schools had "A" and "B" teams competing. Each team can have no more than one former varsity player on its squad.
     
    The 2013 national tournament is scheduled for April 11-13 in Surprise, Ariz.
